Air Gap

Meaning

An air gap is a physical or logical separation that prevents production systems from directly accessing critical backup or vault data. Historically this meant offline tape, but today it often includes isolated cloud accounts, segregated networks and one-way replication paths. The industry consensus is that some form of air-gapped or logically isolated copy is essential to withstand destructive attacks that target both production and backup infrastructure.

Why It Matters

Air Gap is important in modern data and cyber resilience because it shapes protection, monitoring and recovery design.
