Recovery tiering groups applications and systems into tiers based on their criticality and required RTO/RPO, and defines corresponding recovery strategies. It helps prioritise investment and effort. Consensus is that tiering is essential to avoid both overspending on low-value systems and under-protecting critical services, and should be informed by a proper Business Impact Analysis.
